Speed decides who moves first, and the first turn decides most Epic Seven fights. A team with perfect damage stats and the wrong turn order loses to a team with worse gear and a coherent speed plan.

Speed tuning is the practice of setting each hero's speed so the team acts in the intended order.

How speed works

A hero's speed comes from three sources:

  1. Base speed from the hero.
  2. Flat speed from gear and artifacts.
  3. Percentage speed from sets and buffs.

Percentage bonuses apply to the hero's base speed; flat speed from gear is added on top. That is why a hero with a high base speed gains more from a Speed set than a slow hero does.

Source Effect
Speed set +25% base speed
Speed buff +30% base speed
Speed substats Flat speed
Speed boots Flat speed main stat
Speed imprint Team-wide speed

Speed boots are close to mandatory on openers and supports. A 40-speed boot is worth more than most other main stats for a hero whose job is to move first.

Combat readiness

Combat readiness (CR) is the fill bar that determines turn order. A hero acts when the bar reaches 100%.

  • CR push moves a hero's bar forward.
  • CR reduction moves an enemy's bar back.
  • Speed determines how fast the bar fills.

A 30% CR push is not the same as 30% more speed. It moves the hero forward on the current bar, which can leapfrog a faster enemy for one turn.

This is why CR manipulation is so strong in PvP: it changes turn order without changing speed.

Why turn order matters

Team Intended order
Wyvern Debuffer → damage dealer
Arena cleave Opener → buffer → AoE damage
Bruiser Cleanse → tank → damage
Control Opener → control → damage

If the order is wrong, the skills do not connect. A defense break that lands after the damage dealer acts is wasted. A cleanse that happens before the debuff removes nothing.

Tune from the opener

Tune the team from the opener backward. Set the fastest hero first, then make each subsequent hero slower by enough to act after the previous one.

Speed breakpoints by content

Content Role Target
Wyvern 13 Furious / Muwi 200-220
Wyvern 13 Sigret 130-150
Wyvern 13 Brieg 160-180
Banshee 13 Cleanser 200-220
Golem 13 Debuffer 190-210
Azimanak 13 Support 190-210
Arena Opener 260+
RTA Opener As high as possible
RTA Support 220-260
RTA Damage 180-220
Abyss Healer 200+

These are starting points. A Wyvern team with a 240-speed Furious is not wrong; it is simply investing more gear into speed than the fight requires.

Tuning a Wyvern team

The standard order is Furious, Muwi, Sigret, Brieg.

  • Furious at 200-220 applies defense break first.
  • Muwi at 180-200 adds debuffs.
  • Sigret at 130-150 attacks into the debuffed boss.
  • Brieg at 160-180 holds the front.

Sigret is intentionally slower than the debuffers. If she is faster, she attacks before the defense break and loses damage.

A common mistake is making Sigret the fastest hero because she is the damage dealer. Damage without setup is not damage.

Tuning an Arena cleave team

The order is opener, buffer, damage.

  • Opener at 260+ starts the chain.
  • Buffer at 230-250 applies attack buff or CR push.
  • Damage at 180-220 kills.

The gap between the opener and the buffer should be small enough that the enemy does not cut in. A 40-speed gap is safer than a 5-speed gap, because turn order can shift with small speed differences and CR effects.

Speed RNG and buffer

Turn order is not always perfectly deterministic. Small speed differences and CR effects can produce a cut-in. Leave a buffer between heroes whose order matters.

A 5-speed gap is not a plan. A 20-40 speed gap is.

Speed imprint

Speed imprints raise the whole team's speed. They are often the difference between winning and losing the opener race.

  • Check whether your team has a speed imprint available.
  • Put the imprint on a hero that survives the first turn.
  • Do not sacrifice the team's plan just to fit an imprint.

A 10% speed imprint on a 250-speed opener is worth more than a damage imprint on a hero that never acts.

Artifacts that affect speed

Artifact type Effect
Speed on hit Builds speed over the fight
CR push on skill Moves the team forward
Speed at battle start Opens faster
CR reduction Slows the enemy

Artifacts that grant CR are often better than raw speed because they affect the whole team.

Common speed tuning mistakes

Making the damage dealer fastest. It acts before the setup.

Ignoring the healer's speed. A slow cleanser cleanses after the damage is done.

Tuning to exact speed. Leave a buffer for variance and CR effects.

Over-investing in speed on a tank. A tank needs HP and Defense more than 20 extra speed.

Forgetting speed boots on supports. A support with no speed boots is a support that acts last.

Copying a speed target without the gear. A 280-speed opener needs speed substats on every piece.

How to check your tuning

  1. Write down each hero's speed.
  2. Sort them from fastest to slowest.
  3. Compare the order to the intended skill order.
  4. Adjust one hero at a time.
  5. Test in the actual content, not in the stats screen.

The stats screen shows speed; only the battle shows order. CR effects, speed buffs and artifacts can change the result.

FAQ

How does speed tuning work in Epic Seven?

Turn order is determined by combat readiness and speed. Tune from the opener backward, leaving a buffer for speed RNG and enemy passives.

What speed should my Wyvern team have?

Furious around 200-220, Muwi around 180-200, Brieg around 160-180, and Sigret around 130-150. The exact numbers depend on your gear and artifacts.

Do speed sets always beat broken sets?

No. A broken set with 18 speed can beat a speed set with bad rolls. Compare the final speed and the stat budget, not the set label.
