Epic Seven Arena Defense Teams
Epic Seven Arena defense teams that hold: speed cleave, bruiser, stall and counter comps, with stat targets and the AI rules that decide wins.

Arena defense is a different problem from offense. You do not control the turns, you cannot adapt, and the AI will use skills in a fixed order. A defense that looks strong on paper can lose because the healer used the wrong skill on turn one.
The best defenses are not the ones with the highest combat power. They are the ones where the AI's default behavior still produces a coherent plan.
How defense AI works
- Skill order follows the priority set by the game, not by the situation.
- The AI prefers available skills with the highest priority.
- Cooldowns are used as soon as they are available unless the skill is conditional.
- Targeting is generally by role and health, not by threat.
This means a defense should be built so that the default skill order is also the correct order. If the team only works when a specific skill is held, the AI will lose.
Test your defense by attacking it with a friend or alt. Watching the AI misplay is faster than guessing why the defense is losing.
The four defense archetypes
| Archetype | Win condition | Weak to |
|---|---|---|
| Speed cleave | Kill before the attacker acts | Tanky teams, immunity, counter |
| Bruiser | Outlast and grind | High burst, defense break |
| Stall / revive | Run the attacker out of damage | Sustained damage, unhealable |
| Counter | Punish multi-hit attackers | Single-target burst, control |
Pick one archetype and commit. A defense that mixes cleave and stall usually does neither well.
Speed cleave defense
The opener moves first, the damage follows, and the attacker loses a hero before taking a turn.
| Slot | Hero examples | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Opener | Rinak, a fast CR pusher | Start the chain |
| Support | Fallen Cecilia, Genesis Ras | Buff and protect |
| AoE damage | Boss Arunka, Setsuka | Kill the team |
| Flex | Belian, Harsetti | Control or survive |
Requirements:
- The opener must be faster than the attacker's opener.
- The damage dealer must crit-cap and have enough Crit Damage.
- The team needs a plan if the first wave does not kill.
Speed cleave is the most common defense and the easiest to counter with a faster opener or immunity. It works best in lower ranks, where attackers have less speed.
Bruiser defense
Bruisers win by surviving the opener and grinding the attacker down.
| Slot | Hero examples | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Tank | Fallen Cecilia, Krau | Absorb damage |
| Support | Empyrean Ilynav, School Nurse Yulha | Sustain and cleanse |
| Damage | Boss Arunka, Specter Tenebria | Pressure |
| Flex | Belian, Ruele | Control or revive |
Requirements:
- Every hero has enough HP to survive a cleave.
- The team has a cleanse or immunity.
- Damage is spread across two heroes so one ban or death does not end the threat.
Bruiser defenses are harder to build than cleave but more stable across ranks.
Stall and revive defense
The defense wins by making the attacker run out of damage or time.
| Slot | Hero examples | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Reviver | Ruele | Undo the first kill |
| Healer | Destina, School Nurse Yulha | Sustain |
| Tank | Fallen Cecilia, Belian | Absorb |
| Flex | Harsetti, Politis | Control |
Requirements:
- Enough healing to recover from a burst window.
- A reviver that survives to use the revive.
- A answer to unhealable, or the stall collapses.
Stall is frustrating to attack but slow to win with. It is a good defense for players who do not want to chase speed.
Counter defense
Counter teams punish multi-hit attackers and AoE.
| Slot | Hero examples | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Counter DPS | A Counter-set bruiser | Punish hits |
| Support | Fallen Cecilia | Protect |
| Healer | Destina | Sustain |
| Flex | Belian | Control |
Counter sets are the core. A counter proc can swing a fight that the attacker was winning.
Stat targets
| Role | HP | Defense | Speed | Other |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tank | 22,000+ | 1,800+ | 160+ | Effect Resistance |
| Healer | 18,000+ | 1,200+ | 200+ | Effect Resistance |
| Damage | 13,000+ | 900+ | 180-200 | Crit cap |
| Opener | 12,000+ | 800+ | 260+ | Effectiveness |
A defense with a 250-speed opener but 15,000 HP on the tank will lose to a single defense break.
Artifacts that change defense wins
| Artifact type | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Damage reduction | Keeps the tank alive through the opener |
| Cleanse / immunity | Answers control and debuffs |
| Revive | Undoes a burst window |
| Counter / dual attack | Adds pressure the AI can use |
Artifacts that require manual timing are worse on defense than artifacts that trigger automatically.
Common defense mistakes
No cleanse. Control teams walk through the defense.
One damage dealer. Kill it and the defense has no win condition.
Speed without bulk. The opener moves first and dies first.
Mixed archetype. Cleave and stall pieces do not reinforce each other.
Ignoring Effect Resistance. A disabled healer is not a healer.
Copying a top-team without the gear. The composition assumes stats you may not have.
How to improve a losing defense
- Watch a replay and identify the turn the defense lost.
- Check whether the AI used the right skill.
- Fix the stat that failed: speed, HP, Effect Resistance or damage.
- Change one hero, not the whole team.
- Retest against the same attack pattern.
Most defenses lose to one repeated pattern. Fixing that pattern raises the win rate more than adding a new hero.
FAQ
What makes a good arena defense team?
One that wins on defense AI, not on manual play. Speed cleave, bruiser, stall and counter shells each punish a different attacker.
Why does my defense lose more than it should?
The AI uses skills in a fixed order and does not hold burst. A defense that needs perfect timing will misplay; build around passive value and survivability.
How often should I change my defense?
Change it when the attackers in your rank adapt. If you see the same counter team repeatedly, swap the shell rather than tweaking one hero.
